Raise Your Hands

March 31, 2008 · 6 Comments

Cross Posted at Techlearning Raise your hand if you spent time exploring, challenging, refining, and enhancing your professional practice today? Now, raise your other hand if that professional learning took place in a collaborative context with other professionals? I’m not a reform expert, but if all educators are not raising their hands almost each and every day when asked, the talk about school change and 21st Century learning environments is lost to the reality that the professionals that make up educations are... [Read the full story]

Reflecting Upon Prensky’s Principles of Principals

March 24, 2008 · 3 Comments

It seems everyone has their list of principles for principals, so seeing Marc Prensky jump into the mix with his Prensky’s Principles for Principals in a recent Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development Educational Leadership article didn’t really surprise me. However, what did surprise me a bit was his list, a list I’m hoping was strictly from the perspective of enhancing student engagement and technology infusion. If not, Prensky greatly missed the mark in my opinion. While I’m the... [Read the full story]

Expanding the Boundaries: An ASCD Proposal

May 4, 2008 · Leave a Comment

At the start of the year, I talked about my hope that educational technologists would expand their boundaries and seek to bring the discussions within the “echo chamber” to the “mainstream”. Since I never want to be one to only talk the talk, I looked to the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development as ideal to begin personally expanding these boundaries. Thus, David Jakes and I created the following proposal and submitted it to the 2009 ASCD Annual Conference: Learning Beyond Boundaries. Presentation... [Read the full story]

On Writing from the Perspective of Students

May 11, 2008 · 3 Comments

The recent PEW survey Writing, Technology and Teens has prompted a number of writings across the Net over the past few weeks. While much of the writing focuses on different areas of the study, it seems one is causing unjustified assumptions and another critical part of the survey is relatively non-existent in these discussions. Teen Bloggers and Writing One finding of the PEW Survey was that teenage bloggers write more (47% compared to 33%) and find more value in writing (65% compared to 53%) than non-blogging teens. On... [Read the full story]

SMART Networking

March 18, 2008 · 1 Comment

The whole concept of networking in a virtual space may seem a bit foreign for some educators especially when considering some of the tools might feel like a great leap into the unknown. A great starting point for those feeling a bit overwhelmed but recognizing the great value in enriching your personal learning environment is through the variety of Nings established for educators: Classroom 2.0, The Global Education Collaborative, EduBloggerWorld, and many more. One great Ning for educators using or pondering the use of... [Read the full story]

What Will You Do With This?

April 16, 2008 · Leave a Comment

It is a little over twenty four hours since I had the opportunity to engage in a discussion with some amazing young scholars at my school taking part in the Horizon Project 2008. Yes, we’ve been together for over a month but the true start to our journey began with a great discussion prompted by Don Tapscott’s Horizon Project Keynote. After listening and pondering the thoughts from these scholars, I continue to sit here with a sense of excitement because their thoughts, their ideas, are critical to all that is... [Read the full story]
